John Woo is the most popular Asian director in the world, but it originally didn't start out that way. In the early 80's, Woo's career spiraled so low he had to take any possible jobs he could get. He was doing a lot of comedies until "A Better Tomorrow" changed his career. It was a huge critical and box office hit. Ever since, John Woo has been known primarily as an action director. In 1989, Woo garnered the world's attention with "The Killer," and then again in 1992 with "Hardboiled." He broke into the US market in 1994 with the Van Damme vehicle "Hard Target." He worked on "Broken Arrow" after failing to bring "Tears of the Sun" into production. With the success of "Face/Off," Woo became a power player in Hollywood. With the success of "Mission Impossible 2," Woo's status is insured.
