WONG  KAR  WAI

NAME: Wong Kar Wai

Wong Kar Wai is most famous for his work on "Chung King Express," the first release of Quentin Tarantino's Rolling Thunder banner.  He gained critical and commerical success with "As Tears Go By," but decided to appoarch his next film with a more experimental and artistic style.  It was initially planned as a two-part film, but "Days of Being Wild" was a bomb, killing the chances of a sequel.  Although praised by critics, his films do better financially overseas than they do in Hong Kong.  He spent the next couple of years working on "Ashes of Time," an epic based on the famous novel, "Eagle Shooting Heroes."  Stressed halfway through production, he sought to refresh his imagination by making another film.  The film, "Chung King Express," became his biggest film.  Originally, it was supposed to contain three stories, but the stories became too big to fit into one movie.  So Wong Kar Wai took the third story and turned it into "Fallen Angels."  He was awarded for best director at Cannes in 1997.  He is currently in pre-production on "2416," a sci-fi film set to star Tony Leung Chui Wai, Carina Lau, and Faye Wong.
